The silence after Hailey’s confession lasted only three seconds.
Then the auditorium exploded with laughter.
“You can’t be serious.”
“Did she really just say that?”
“She’s completely lost it.”
Students doubled over in their seats.
Teachers exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Even some of the faculty members couldn’t hide their skepticism.
Standing on the stage, Candice almost felt sorry for Hailey.
Almost.
Vice Principal Foster stared at her as if she had announced she was the Queen of England.
“You expect me to believe that?”
His voice echoed through the auditorium.
Hailey’s confidence wavered.
Only slightly.
“It’s true.”
She took another step forward.
“I really am Hailey Kaplan.”
The crowd laughed even harder.
Someone in the back shouted:
“And I’m Batman!”
More laughter followed.
Foster sighed dramatically.
Then gestured toward her clothes.
“Look at the way you dress.”
The audience immediately nodded.
Exactly.
That was the problem.
“A Kaplan heiress wouldn’t be wearing…”
His eyes traveled over her plain hoodie and jeans.
“…whatever it is you have on.”
The room erupted again.
Candice lowered her head to hide her smile.
This was too easy.
“But it’s true.”
Hailey refused to back down.
“I can prove it if you just give me—”
“That’s enough.”
Foster’s voice cracked through the auditorium like a whip.
The room instantly fell silent.
Hailey froze.
For the first time since transferring schools, she felt completely powerless.
The truth was standing right in front of everyone.
And nobody wanted to hear it.
“One week of detention.”
The announcement hit her like a punch.
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Candice’s eyes widened.
Even she hadn’t expected that.
Foster wasn’t finished.
“And if I hear one more word about this ridiculous claim…”
He pointed directly at Hailey.
“…it’ll become a suspension.”
The threat hung in the air.
Heavy.
Final.
Unavoidable.
“But I—”
“Not another word.”
The vice principal’s face hardened.
“Now get out of my sight.”
The auditorium remained silent as Hailey slowly stepped away.
Humiliation burned in her chest.
Not because people doubted her.
She expected that.
But because they refused to even consider the possibility.
As she walked toward the exit, she could feel hundreds of eyes watching her.
Judging her.
Mocking her.
Dismissing her.
Meanwhile, Candice stood in the spotlight.
Smiling.
Receiving applause.
Receiving admiration.
Receiving everything that should have belonged to Hailey.
For the first time since arriving at Western High, Hailey questioned herself.
Maybe hiding my identity was a mistake.
Maybe I should’ve told the truth from day one.
Maybe I waited too long.
But deep down, she knew something else.
This wasn’t over.
Not even close.
Because lies always left evidence behind.
And Candice was creating more evidence every day.
Eventually, the truth would catch up.
It always did.
Later that afternoon…
The battlefield shifted.
From the auditorium.
To the gymnasium.
A whistle echoed across the court.
Students groaned immediately.
Coach Reynolds grinned.
A dangerous grin.
The kind teachers only wore before causing suffering.
“Alright, you adolescent pubescents!”
The coach’s voice thundered throughout the gym.
“Today is the day you’ve all been dreading.”
The students collectively sighed.
They already knew.
“Dodgeball.”
The entire gym erupted in complaints.
“Oh, come on!”
“Seriously?”
“I hate dodgeball.”
“Can we just take a test instead?”
The coach laughed.
“No.”
Near the entrance, a tall blond boy rushed into the gym.
Trey Dawson.
Star quarterback.
Part-time troublemaker.
Full-time magnet for bad luck.
Unfortunately for him, he was late.
“Sorry, Coach!”
Trey panted.
“I got lost—”
“Save it.”
Coach Reynolds pointed toward the track.
“Give me a lap around the gym.”
Trey groaned.
“Now.”
The coach blew his whistle.
As Trey started running, several students laughed.
One dodgeball player smirked.
“Looking a little scared there, Trey.”
The quarterback rolled his eyes.
“Don’t worry.”
The student tossed a ball into the air.
“The rules are simple.”
A grin spread across his face.
“Just don’t get your head bashed in.”
The gym burst into laughter.
“You don’t use it much anyway.”
Trey laughed despite himself.
“Yeah, okay.”
The atmosphere instantly became lighter.
Unlike the tension-filled assembly earlier.
Then the gym doors opened again.
And every head turned.
Candice entered.
Fashionably late.
Of course.
She wasn’t even carrying gym clothes.
She looked like she was arriving at a photoshoot instead of P.E.
“Sorry I’m late, Coach.”
Her voice dripped with confidence.
“I had a call with my personal trainer.”
Several students looked impressed.
Others looked jealous.
A few rolled their eyes.
But Coach Reynolds immediately smiled.
“No worries at all, Kaplan.”
The special treatment was obvious.
Painfully obvious.
Yet nobody questioned it.
Nobody except one person.
Hailey.
Standing quietly near the bleachers.
Watching.
Waiting.
Learning.
The coach glanced around the gym.
Then clapped his hands.
“Perfect timing.”
Students immediately paid attention.
Because that tone always meant trouble.
Coach Reynolds pointed toward center court.
“Hailey.”
Then he pointed toward Candice.
“And Candice.”
The gym grew quiet.
Very quiet.
Everyone sensed drama coming.
“You two are today’s team captains.”
A collective gasp spread across the room.
Candice smiled confidently.
Of course she was captain.
That was expected.
Hailey, however, narrowed her eyes.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
The coach tossed them each a dodgeball.
“Pick your soldiers.”
The words echoed through the gym.
Students immediately began whispering.
Who would choose Candice?
Who would choose Hailey?
And more importantly…
What would happen when the real heiress and the fake queen bee finally faced each other on the same battlefield?
To be continued…
