The night air outside the apartment felt unusually still.
Jocelyn West stood frozen in place, the words still echoing in her mind.
“Let’s get married.”
Ray Astor watched her carefully.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as a powerful man who controlled industries.
But as someone who, for the first time in years, felt uncertain.
“I know it’s sudden,” he said more softly, stepping closer.
His voice dropped, almost vulnerable.
“It’s been a long time since I had anyone in my life… after my divorce.”
Jocelyn blinked.
Ray exhaled slowly, as if letting go of something he had carried for too long.
“I can’t explain it,” he continued. “But I feel like you’re the one I want to spend the rest of my life with.”
The world around them seemed to fade.
Only his words remained.
“Jocelyn,” he said again, steady now. “Will you marry me?”
For a moment, she didn’t speak.
Her heart raced—not from fear, but from disbelief.
This man had entered her life as a stranger.
A “construction worker.”
A quiet, grounded man who somehow made her feel safe in a way she hadn’t felt in years.
And now he was asking her to marry him.
Jocelyn gave a small, almost breathless laugh.
“That’s so crazy…”
Ray didn’t interrupt.
He simply waited.
And that patience… that sincerity… broke through her hesitation.
“I just thought you should know,” she said softly, “we just met.”
Ray nodded once.
“I know.”
A pause.
Then Jocelyn looked at him more clearly.
And something inside her settled.
“Okay,” she said.
Ray’s eyes widened slightly.
“…Okay?”
She nodded again, firmer this time.
“Yes. I’ll marry you.”
For the first time that night, Ray Astor smiled—real, unguarded relief.
Not long after, everything moved faster than either of them expected.
A simple ceremony.
No grand audience.
No luxury spectacle.
Just two people choosing each other in the quietest, most unexpected way.
They were married.
When Violet Astor received the news, she nearly screamed with excitement.
“Congrats, Dad!” she said over the phone. “You have great taste in women!”
Ray chuckled softly.
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
But then his tone shifted.
“There’s one thing you should know.”
Violet paused.
“What is it?”
Ray leaned back slightly, lowering his voice.
“She doesn’t know I’m your father… or my real occupation.”
Silence.
Then—
“You what?” Violet exploded. “Why would you lie to her? You’re basically starting a sham marriage!”
Ray rubbed his temple.
“I wanted to see her reaction,” he admitted. “If I showed up as a blue-collar man… no money, no status.”
He paused, thinking back to Jocelyn’s calm acceptance.
“As it turns out… she accepted me for me. Not my money. Not my job.”
His voice softened.
“That’s someone I can spend the rest of my life with.”
Violet quieted.
Ray continued.
“I’ll tell her the truth when the time is right. But you cannot blow my cover.”
A beat of silence.
Then Violet sighed.
“Fine.”
Ray smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Then came another question.
“So… where are you two living?”
Ray’s tone brightened slightly.
“I bought a small house for us.”
Violet gasped.
“I already gave her the keys.”
A pause.
“In fact,” he added, “she’s moving in today.”
On the other end of the line, Violet practically squealed.
“Yay!”
And somewhere across the city, Jocelyn West unknowingly stepped into a new home… and a new life… not realizing just how deeply her fate had already intertwined with the man she had just married.
