Jocelyn West stood by the window, her phone still warm in her hand.
“I got married,” she said gently.
On the other end of the line, Harry went silent.
“What?”
Jocelyn took a breath, almost as if she was still trying to believe it herself.
“I’m not going back to my hometown,” she added. “I’m staying here.”
A long pause followed.
Then Harry’s voice finally broke through.
“That’s… amazing. Who’s the lucky guy?”
Jocelyn hesitated.
“…He’s a construction worker I met.”
There was another brief silence—this one softer.
Then Harry chuckled.
“That’s great, Mom.”
His tone shifted quickly, more excited now.
“Hey, we’re throwing a Mother’s Day party this weekend. You should come.”
Jocelyn smiled faintly.
“Okay. I’ll come.”
But the warmth didn’t last long.
Across the room, a sharp voice cut through the conversation like ice.
“That party is for me, not her.”
Stacy stood in the hallway with a cold expression.
“Now that you’re married, you can leave us alone.”
Her eyes narrowed at Jocelyn.
“We don’t need a parasite like you in our lives.”
The words hit like a slap.
Jocelyn lowered her gaze, silently absorbing the humiliation.
She didn’t respond.
She simply turned away.
Later that day.
The house was quiet.
Jocelyn stepped inside her new home, still unfamiliar with the space Ray had arranged for them.
“It’s so big…” she murmured softly.
She walked further in, taking in the modern interior, the soft lighting, the calm atmosphere.
For the first time in years… she felt like she might finally belong somewhere.
Then—
She turned a corner.
And froze.
“OH MY GOD!”
A man stood in the living room.
Fresh out of the shower.
Water still glistening on his skin.
A towel hung loosely as he looked up in shock.
Jocelyn immediately turned around.
“I—I’m so sorry!”
Behind her, the man froze as well.
Ray Astor.
Except to Jocelyn… he was still just the “construction worker” she had married.
And in that split second, both of them realized something important:
Living together was going to make this marriage far more complicated than either of them expected.
