We Will Love Again – Episode 02

Three days before Alaina ended her engagement, she sat beside her mother’s hospital bed with Noah at her shoulder. Machines hummed softly in the sterile room, marking time in numbers neither of them could control. Alaina held her mother’s limp hand and tried to fill the silence with hope.

“Hey, Mama. I know you can hear me.” She smiled through the ache of receiving no response. “I’m so happy. I wanted to share the good news with you. Noah proposed, and we’re getting married.”

The ring caught the pale hospital light as she lifted her hand. It was modest, but to Alaina it represented every home, morning, and ordinary happiness she had ever wanted. She wished her mother could open her eyes and celebrate with her, even for a moment.

Noah curled an arm around Alaina and drew her against him. “You’re my everything,” he murmured. His promise was simple, absolute, and powerful enough to make the frightening room feel warmer.

The door opened before Alaina could answer. Noah’s mother walked in with a composed expression that did not soften at the sight of the patient. Noah greeted her with surprise, unaware that she had arrived with a purpose far removed from offering comfort.

“Would you be a sweetheart and pick me up a cup of coffee downstairs?” Mrs. Preston asked him. The request sounded harmless. Noah agreed at once and kissed Alaina before leaving, promising he would be back in a second.

The instant the door closed, the atmosphere changed. Mrs. Preston looked at the ring, then at the woman in the bed. “How’s your mother, Alaina?” she asked, her polite tone unable to conceal her judgment.

“I haven’t given up hope.” Alaina straightened in her chair. She had always sensed that Noah’s mother disapproved of her, but she had never seen such open hopelessness on the older woman’s face.

“When I heard Noah had proposed, I felt more hopeless than I have ever felt in my life.” Mrs. Preston’s statement landed without warning. Alaina stared at her, unable to reconcile the cruelty of those words with what should have been joyful news.

“What are you talking about, Mrs. Preston?” Alaina asked. Instinctively, she tightened her hold on her mother’s hand, as if the fragile contact could steady her against whatever was coming.

Mrs. Preston did not hesitate. “Noah has been accepted to Oxford on a Fulbright program. This is his last chance.” Alaina’s breath caught. Noah had never mentioned Oxford, an acceptance, or any choice that might take him away from her.

The omission wounded, but its meaning frightened her more. She knew Noah well enough to understand why he had remained silent. He had already decided that staying beside her mattered more than the opportunity, and he feared she would never let him make that sacrifice if she knew.

“He never told me,” Alaina whispered. The happiness she had felt moments ago began to look selfish beneath the relentless hospital lights. Their wedding, her mother’s illness, and the life Noah wanted to build with her had become weights on opposite sides of a scale.

“Do you know what else he didn’t tell you?” Mrs. Preston pressed. “Four years ago, he turned down Harvard to be here with you.” The revelation stripped away Alaina’s last defense. This was not one missed opportunity; it was a pattern of love costing Noah pieces of his future.

Mrs. Preston glanced toward the hospital bed. “He’s giving everything up to stay in this godforsaken town and take care of this godforsaken mother of yours.” Alaina flinched at the insult, anger surging through her grief. No one had the right to call her mother a burden.

“I love him,” she said, forcing the words past the tightness in her throat. It was both a defense and a plea. She wanted Mrs. Preston to understand that Noah was not trapped, that what they shared was real and worth protecting.

“If you really loved him, you would stop dragging him down with you.” Mrs. Preston’s gaze remained cold. “Your mother is your own burden. Don’t put that on my son.”

Alaina wanted to throw her out, tell Noah everything, and cling to the future he had promised. Yet Oxford echoed in her mind beside Harvard, two doors he had been willing to close because he could not bear to abandon her. Love suddenly demanded something far more painful than staying.

Footsteps passed in the corridor, warning that Noah could return at any moment. Mrs. Preston leaned closer and delivered the command she had come to give. “Leave him, Alaina.” There was no suggestion of a temporary separation, only a clean wound meant to set him free.

Alaina looked at her unconscious mother, then at the engagement ring Noah had sacrificed so much to place on her hand. “Why are you doing this to me?” she whispered, but the answer was already taking shape inside her. If she wanted Noah to choose his future, she would have to make him believe she had never deserved a place in it.
