True Heiress vs. Fake Queen Bee — Episode 6

By lunchtime, Candice’s influence had spread through Western High like a command. Students who had never spoken to her reorganized their tables to make space, while anyone hoping for a castle invitation hovered nearby with compliments. Hailey entered the dining hall carrying a tray and watched seats disappear before she reached them. One glance from Candice was enough to make every welcome vanish.

Hailey moved from table to table, asking politely whether a chair was free. Students avoided her eyes or covered empty places with backpacks, frightened that kindness might cost them Candice’s approval. The isolation stung more than Hailey wanted to admit. She had hidden her fortune to find genuine friends, only to discover how eagerly strangers participated in cruelty for proximity to wealth.

Her stomach growled as she navigated the crowded aisle. She regretted refusing the omelet prepared at home, though the thought almost made her smile. Somewhere, her father likely believed the greatest danger of public school was an inadequate breakfast. He would never imagine that his daughter could not find a safe place to sit.

Candice noticed Hailey approaching and extended one elegant leg into the aisle. Gail saw the movement and covered a laugh with her hand. Hailey’s tray blocked her view until her foot caught against Candice’s ankle. She pitched forward before she could recover.

The tray struck the floor with a violent clatter. Sauce splashed across Hailey’s shirt, dishes scattered beneath nearby tables, and her knees hit the hard tile. Pain shot through one leg as skin tore, leaving a thin line of blood. For a second, the dining hall fell silent.

Then laughter erupted. Candice widened her eyes in false innocence and apologized for not seeing Hailey there, claiming she blended too well with the other losers. Gail doubled over, delighted by the spectacle. Several phones appeared, capturing Hailey on the floor before anyone offered a hand.

Humiliation burned through Hailey’s face. She pushed herself upright, but Candice pressed a shoe near her path and told her to stay down. The command was quiet, meant only for the girls closest to hear, yet its certainty enraged Hailey. Candice had begun to believe the stolen name gave her the right to decide who stood.

Hailey rose anyway. Sauce dripped from the front of her shirt, and her injured knee throbbed, but she refused to wipe either while Candice watched. She asked why someone who claimed to be rich and powerful remained so obsessed with her. The question sliced through the laughter because everyone had noticed how often Candice singled her out.

Candice scoffed that obsession was the wrong word; she was disgusted. Hailey tilted her head and pointed out that disgust generally inspired avoidance, while Candice kept seeking her out. If Hailey was truly a nobody, why did the supposed Kaplan heiress seem so threatened by her? A few students exchanged uncertain looks.

The shift in attention alarmed Candice. She declared that someone had to teach a troll how the school worked, then ordered Hailey to know her place. The insult was intended to restore the hierarchy, but it exposed how much Candice needed everyone to accept one. Without people beneath her, the identity she had stolen would feel meaningless.

“My place?” Hailey repeated. She took one deliberate step closer despite her bleeding knee. “And what’s your place, Candice?” From where Hailey stood, Candice looked less like an heiress than someone auditioning desperately for a discount version of a high-school villain. The comparison to a Walmart edition of *Mean Girls* sent a burst of shocked laughter across the nearest tables.

Candice’s expression cracked. The poised socialite vanished, revealing raw fury beneath the makeup. She lunged forward and called Hailey a vicious name, too angry to remember the gracious image she had been cultivating. Gail reached for Hailey’s arm, expecting her to retreat.

Hailey caught the edge of the abandoned spaghetti plate first. She lifted it from the floor and, with a calm that made the act more devastating, smeared the remaining sauce across Candice’s flawless face. Red streaks coated her cheek and hair while a strand of pasta clung to her expensive collar. The room gasped as one.

For several seconds, Candice could not move. Her rented luxury, carefully applied makeup, and new authority had been reduced to a cafeteria punch line. Someone at the back laughed before abruptly pretending to cough. The sound told Candice that control was slipping.

She wiped sauce from her eye and stared at Hailey with murderous disbelief. Gail began shouting, demanding to know what was wrong with her, while another student swore loudly. Hailey did not apologize. She simply pointed out that people should not start fights they could not finish.

The dining hall supervisor finally pushed through the gathering crowd. Candice instantly transformed her rage into injured outrage, claiming Hailey had attacked her without provocation. Gail supported every word, omitting the trip and the order to remain on the floor. The phones recording the incident stayed conspicuously lowered.

Hailey looked around for one person willing to tell the truth. Eyes dropped toward tables and trays. Fear of Candice—or of the Kaplan fortune students believed stood behind her—proved stronger than what dozens had witnessed. Hailey understood then that the lie had become more dangerous than a popularity game.

She could reveal herself, call her father, and make the cafeteria supervisor listen. Instead, she met Candice’s furious gaze and allowed a small smile to appear. The sauce had done what explanations could not: it showed the entire room that the false queen could be challenged. Candice might control their invitations, but she no longer controlled Hailey.

As Hailey limped toward the nurse’s office, whispers followed her through the hall. Some students mocked her, yet others repeated the joke about Candice under their breath. The social order had not changed, but it had developed its first visible fracture. Candice heard every suppressed laugh while Gail tried to clean the stains from her clothes.

Candice gripped the ruined fabric and watched Hailey disappear. The party was no longer enough; admiration alone could not erase what had happened. She needed to humiliate Hailey so completely that no one would ever laugh at Candice again. When she spotted a flash of gold beneath Hailey’s raised sleeve, she finally saw the weapon she could use next.
