The Alpha Queen Returns – Chapter 5
Before Jessica arrived at the Russo estate, Caroline had already been cornered by Rex.
The young princess stood trembling against the wall as the powerful wolf shifter leaned close enough for her to feel his threatening aura.
Rex’s eyes were cold.
“And when your mother gets here…”
His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
“Don’t say a word.”
Caroline’s heart pounded.
“If you tell her anything…”
He grabbed her arm tightly.
“I’ll hunt your mother down and kill her.”
Tears instantly filled Caroline’s eyes.
Rex released her and straightened his clothes as if nothing had happened.
“Got it?”
Caroline could only nod.
“Good.”
Rex smirked.
“Now go wash your face and put on some normal clothes.”
His gaze swept over her worn outfit with disgust.
“You’re filthy.”
A few minutes later, Jessica arrived.
The moment Caroline saw her mother, she wanted nothing more than to run into her arms and tell her everything.
The abuse.
The threats.
The lies.
But Rex’s warning echoed inside her mind.
I’ll kill her.
Caroline couldn’t take that risk.
Not for herself.
Not for her mother.
Jessica knelt before her daughter and gently touched her cheek.
“Caroline.”
Her voice was full of concern.
“Tell me what happened.”
Caroline’s lips trembled.
For a moment, the truth nearly escaped.
Then she glanced at Rex.
His icy stare was enough.
Caroline lowered her head.
“Mom…”
Her voice cracked.
“It was an accident.”
Jessica frowned slightly.
“What do you mean?”
“I didn’t mean to hurt Reva.”
The words felt like knives in her chest.
“I’m sorry.”
Jessica studied her daughter’s face carefully.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
But Caroline refused to meet her eyes.
After a long silence, Jessica sighed softly.
“Caroline.”
She brushed a strand of hair from her daughter’s face.
“Just try to be more careful, okay?”
Caroline nodded.
“Sorry.”
Nearby, Melissa Russo immediately stepped into the conversation.
“No need to dwell on it.”
Her voice was suddenly warm and forgiving.
“The children have worked things out.”
Jessica looked toward Reva’s injury.
“Would you like me to examine the wound?”
Melissa waved dismissively.
“No need.”
“The pack doctor already treated her.”
Then she smiled.
“And since Caroline apologized, we’ll continue caring for her here.”
Jessica relaxed slightly.
At least the situation appeared resolved.
Or so she thought.
Melissa exchanged a subtle glance with Rex before continuing.
“Although…”
She hesitated dramatically.
“Taking care of Caroline has been financially difficult.”
Jessica’s expression softened.
“Financially difficult?”
Melissa nodded.
“You know how dangerous things have become.”
She sighed heavily.
“Rogue attacks are hurting our pack.”
“Our resources are stretched thin.”
Jessica immediately felt guilty.
After all, the Russo family had cared for Caroline for years.
Or at least, that was what she believed.
“Then let me help.”
Melissa tried to hide her excitement.
“Oh no, we couldn’t possibly ask for much.”
Jessica smiled.
“How much do you need?”
Melissa pretended to think.
“A million dollars would help.”
The room became silent.
Then Jessica replied casually.
“I’ll give you a billion.”
Melissa nearly choked.
A billion dollars.
Far more than she had dared hope for.
Even Rex looked stunned.
Only Caroline looked heartbroken.
She knew exactly what was happening.
The people abusing her were being rewarded.
And her mother had no idea.
As preparations were made for Jessica’s departure, Caroline finally gathered enough courage to speak.
“Mom…”
Jessica turned.
Caroline’s eyes filled with tears.
“Can’t I just come live with you in the woods?”
The room froze.
For a brief moment, hope flickered inside her chest.
Maybe this time.
Maybe her mother would take her away.
Jessica’s expression softened.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
She hugged Caroline tightly.
“You need to go to school.”
Caroline’s heart sank.
Jessica smiled gently.
“You haven’t even found your wolf yet.”
“You need friends your own age.”
Melissa quickly joined in.
“She’s right.”
Her voice sounded almost motherly.
“You belong here with your peers.”
Caroline wanted to scream.
No.
I don’t.
But she couldn’t.
Not while Rex was watching.
Jessica kissed her forehead.
“Just be more careful, okay?”
Caroline’s eyes filled with tears.
“If you’re happy…”
Jessica whispered.
“I’m happy.”
The words shattered Caroline’s heart.
Because she wasn’t happy.
Not even close.
Moments later, Jessica’s vehicle disappeared down the road.
Caroline stood alone, watching until it vanished from sight.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Mom…”
The instant Jessica was gone, the smiles disappeared from Melissa and Rex’s faces.
The mask was gone.
Only cruelty remained.
Rex stepped forward slowly.
“Were you about to snitch to your mother?”
Caroline froze.
Melissa’s expression darkened.
“You think you can leave us?”
Reva laughed from behind them.
“What a joke.”
Rex grabbed Caroline by the shoulder.
His grip was painfully tight.
“Your mom is gone.”
Fear flooded Caroline’s body.
“There’s nobody to help you now.”
The mansion suddenly felt colder than ever.
As the Russo family surrounded her, Caroline desperately stared toward the distant road where Jessica had disappeared.
Her voice cracked as tears streamed down her face.
“Mom…”
Nobody heard her.
“Please don’t go.”
The darkness around her seemed to close in.
“Mom, save me…”
